I took the plunge
My TV has been failing for about a month. So it is time for a new one.
My old TV is about ten years old. It has started going B&W at random intervals or going “red” or whatever. At first I thought the tv networks were playing with us since it was close to the holidays. But nooooo. the TV is failing. So after doing a bunch of research and viewing many many TVs in the stores. I found that I wanted the Sharp Aquos 46″ (true) HD TV. Which is a 2000:1 native/10000:1 enhanced contrast ratio. Most HD TVs are 12000:1/6000:1. So it is a much clearer picture than most. It is such a high end TV that there is no DVI nor VGA ports on it. Bummer. But it works for me. I have multiple HDMI ports and one of them I will run a DVI->HMDI cable on it.
Now the big questions are this… Stay with DirecTV vs switching to Comcast Cable…. and based on that decision, what my PVR solution will be. DirecTV has more bandwidth that cable does especially with their new satellites up there now. But I get locked into a PVR solution from a very third rate company. It isnt TiVO anymore. idiots! Now if I switch to cable, I can use their PVR service which is not TiVO either but it is better than the new DirecTV service. And Comcast is switching to an all TiVO PVR solution later in 2007. Early testing is now (or shortly) and roll out second half of the year. Also with cable I have the chance to roll my own PVR solution or buy a real TiVO and use their service. Most likely will be roll my own.
more to come.. right now I am trying to recover from the 3k I just spent on the TV, mounting bracket, extended warranty and delivery charges. And I would have paid way more if my father wasnt the negotiator that he is. Whenever I go to buy a serious investment (like this TV or new vehicles).
